A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
