The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
