Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
