Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
